Horror Movie Podcast Ep. 168: HORROR CINEMA AWARDS — A Celebration of the Finest Achievements in 2018 Horror Films

HCA 3rd Horror Cinema Awards ArtHORROR MOVIE PODCAST PRESENTS the 3rd Annual HORROR CINEMA AWARDS — A celebration of the finest filmic achievements in horror for 2018!

We’ve assembled another wonderful jury from every corner of the horror community, including filmmaker, critics, writers, podcasters, artists, and academics. The nominees are in traditional awards show categories like “Best Actress” and “Best Picture.” The nominees were then voted on by our selected jurors, as well as the Horror Movie Podcast hosts and our 2018 HMP Listeners of the Year.

After the main event, your HMP hosts will be giving away their own special “Dead Serious” awards where we get a little more out of the box and award films for their best “Creeptures” or use of “Real Life Horror.”

Horror Movie Podcast is typically a bi-weekly show that’s released every other Monday (yes, we just switched from a Friday release). Title: The Legend of Halloween Jack
Country: Wales, United Kingdom
Year: 2018
Director/Screenwriter: Andrew Jones

On Halloween night in a sleepy seaside town, serial killer Jack Cain returns from the dead to take revenge on the vigilantes who tortured and killed him and buried him in a local corn field. Unfortunately, The Legend of Halloween Jack is yet another movie that helps prove my theory that one can count the number of good scarecrow movies on one hand. And yet, my theory never stops me from trying or hoping for that to change.

“If I told you, you wouldn’t even try it,” replies Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the film’s opening when asked what is in the meat they are eating at a dinner party after a night at the symphony. Anthony Hopkins returns as Lecter in the third (although chronologically first) installment of the wonderful (well, mostly wonderful) saga based on Thomas Harris’ novels.

“From small things comes great power”

The tagline for the horror remake Willard – but whether that power can be controlled is the issue that this film explores.

Crispin Glover (Back to the Future, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter) plays the title character of Willard who is an introverted pushover, bullied by his dying mother (Jackie Burroughs) and his boss Frank Martin (R. Lee Ermey).

He has no friends until he encounters a white rat in his basement named “Socrates”, and soon he befriends and controls a whole army of rats (led by a giant rat named “Ben”). The rats do Willard’s bidding starting with harmless vandalism, but the pranks soon escalate into homicide.
